Your Next Steps
What Happens Now
Here's what to take care of in the first few weeks after your pool is complete.
Schedule your final walkthrough
We'll walk you through your pool, all your equipment, and how to use everything. A great time to ask any remaining questions in person.
Book Your WalkthroughGo through your starter kit
We've dropped off pool essentials (including a brush and net) to get you started.
Prepare for your final inspection
Your pool requires a final inspection before it can be used. We handle the scheduling.
See what to expectSchedule your landscapers
If dirt near the pool is a possibility, we recommend waiting at least 2 weeks after completion before landscaping begins.
Schedule your permanent barrier installation
A fence, screen enclosure, or other approved barrier is required before the final inspection. We recommend waiting at least 3 weeks before screen installation, as nails and screws near the pool can damage the finish.
Set up long-term pool maintenance
We highly recommend Reflections Pool Maintenance — the same company we use for start-up. The ongoing relationship helps us resolve any issues quickly.
(843) 227-3020Consider soft washing and sealing the decking
Sealing your deck can prolong its lifespan, but some sealers can make the surface slippery. We recommend doing your own research before applying any sealer.
First 30 Days
New Pool Startup Checklist
The first 30 days are the most important for your interior finish. Follow these steps carefully to prevent staining and ensure a long-lasting surface.
Do not swim for the first 10 days. Do not place anything in the pool for the first 30 days.
West Bay will not be responsible for damage caused by use during the start-up period.
Brush the pool twice a day if possible. You can't over-brush during start-up.
Brushing is one of the most important parts of the start-up process. We brush as much as we can, but the more you do it, the better the finish. It promotes a consistently smooth surface and helps prevent staining.
Expect cloudy water for the first few weeks. This is completely normal.
The water will clear up on its own as the plaster cures and chemistry stabilizes.
Do not use the heater during the start-up period
The startup chemicals in the water can damage the heater.
The salt system will remain offline during start-up
Salt systems alter water chemistry during curing. Your maintenance provider will bring it online when start-up ends. Adding salt and raising salinity can take up to 3 months in a new pool.
Plaster curing is an organic process and timeframes vary
Curing time depends on pool size, weather, and other factors. Your maintenance provider will guide you.
West Bay provides a maintenance company for the start-up phase
They will handle chemical balancing and cleaning to bring your pool to a stable position.
No swimming for the first 10 days
Do not place anything in the pool for the first 30 days. West Bay will not be responsible for damage caused by use during the start-up period.
Final Inspection
What to Expect
Before your pool can be used, it must pass a final inspection verifying that all required safety systems are in place and meet the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) and applicable local ordinances.
West Bay Pools handles the scheduling and coordination of this inspection as part of your project. Here are some things the inspector looks for.
Permanent pool barrier
ISPSC § 305A fence or approved barrier must enclose the pool on all sides. Minimum 48" height; no gaps wider than 4". Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch on the pool side or 54"+ from ground.
Gate hardware
ISPSC § 305.4All gate latches must be out of reach of small children (pool-side mounting or 54" from bottom). Gates must swing away from the pool and self-close from any position.
Door / window alarms
ISPSC § 307Any door from the house to the pool area must have an audible alarm that sounds when the door is opened. Alarm must be 85 dB at 10 feet and feature a 30-second deactivation mechanism. Alarms must meet UL 2017 standard. You can find compliant alarms on Amazon.

The final inspection is a minimum safety threshold, not a ceiling. We strongly recommend the following additional precautions for families with young children:
- Establish and enforce pool rules with all family members
- Designate a dedicated "water watcher" any time children are in the pool
- Learn CPR. The Red Cross and YMCA offer courses locally.
- Consider a pool surface alarm as a secondary layer of protection
- Keep rescue equipment (shepherd's hook, ring buoy) poolside at all times
